Manual Lymphatic Drainage is performed directly with the hands of a trained professional (physiotherapist or beautician), with or without the aid of creams and devices. The technique is performed following a specific protocol in order to reduce swelling, toxins and fluid retention in the body. Therefore, it is capable of promoting health and aesthetic benefits, as it helps to improve circulation, the immune system, the appearance of the skin and in the reduction or prevention of cellulite.

Unlike massages, which are ancient techniques and alternative treatments, DLM was born in the scientific field and with proven effectiveness, as long as the procedural protocols are respected.

Even so, there are small divergences in the methodologies and protocols of some authors, and nowadays new terms and associations with other related techniques are emerging, but all therapeutic methodologies in lymphatic drainage are effective.

In the field of aesthetics, the most practical protocols are often used, considering that it is impossible to perform a full body drain in an hour. Often packages are also sold with the term drainage, without clarification to the customer about the differences, which ends up creating a little confusion. In addition, DLM can be extremely monotonous for those who like a more vigorous massage, so many clients request drainage due to the commercial appeal of the technique, but do not like the extremely light touches. Therefore, when the demand is purely aesthetic and there are no edema, the therapist can give a more vigorous massage, as drainage will also occur. And from then on there is a fight between the most methodical professionals and those who want to please customers and the result is that many people are confused by what is drainage and what is not.

In fact, the draining process also occurs, indirectly, through body stimulation by any other massages, or by other external procedures such as body warming and even internal processes such as the movements of some organs and the circulatory system. And that is why, when the client has some inflammation or infectious disease, she must cancel any type of massage, as all massages stimulate drainage - and we do not want to spread the infection and accelerate the return of the flow to the circulatory system. before the lymphatic system can defend the organism from infectious agents, would we?

However, when it comes to working on edema (swelling) caused by the accumulation of interstitial fluid, or post-operative, the ideal is to use the most conservative protocols (which does not mean older or more traditional, but those that value more safety). The manual lymphatic drainage protocols in the postoperative period must strictly obey the pressure (extremely soft), the speed (slow, rhythmic and monotonous) and the direction of the lymphatic flow. In addition, the starting and ending points also obey some different protocols, depending on the location and the scars of the surgery, as the traditional routes may be interrupted.
